Protection of a protected structures extends to the land and structures lying within its curtilage. ‘Curtilage’ is the area of ground directly connected with the functioning or inhabitation of a structure, such as a yard, a basement or a passageway to the structure. 

The legislation is not in place to present an obstacle to those who wish to carry out positive projects in their community,
but is there to protect the environment that supports the community. In this way, it can be used as a positive tool by communities that want to raise awareness of their local environment, especially where it may be more appropriate to leave a habitat alone.

The objective of this study, commissioned by the Heritage Council, is to provide a comprehensive audit of on-line heritage materials for the primary school sector that relate directly to the remit of the Council and to assess their current and potential use by teachers and children. This is to inform decision-making and planning around the possible provision of web-based resources for primary schools.

This report presents the results of the first ever survey of the general public in Ireland of heritage awareness. The survey results clearly illustrate the importance the public place on heritage in Ireland today, the perceived benefits of heritage and its conservation, and commonly held attitudes towards the protection of our heritage.
