Rathanna National School- Memories of our School Days
Funded under The Heritage Officer Programme 2023
'Memories of our School Days' project was initiated by the Rathanna Guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA), supported by the Carlow County Council Heritage Office in 2023. This oral history project captured the essence of school life in a bygone era from past pupils and teachers through recorded interviews and archival footage uncovering the rich history and cherished memories of Rathanna National School in south Carlow . From recalling the warmth of coal fires in the classroom to the excitement of visits from the school inspector, these reminiscences offer a glimpse into a bygone era.

Book of Kells new multi-user friendly animations

Two multi-user friendly children’s animations were created to improve access, inclusion and participation in heritage activities at the Book of Kells and Old Library by young children, particularly those with disabilities.

The Digitisation of the Catholic Institute for the Deaf (CID) Minute Books and Related Documents is of paramount importance to the history of the education of the deaf in Ireland between the 1840s and 1950s.

Callan Heritage Regeneration Project

Remedial work on the railing and stone elements of Saint Mary’s Church railing boundary on Green Street and Mill Street, and, work to Kings River footbridge in Callan, Co Kilkenny.
Heritage Led Regeneration of O'Connell Street, Sligo (Phase 1)
Funded under the Historic Towns Initiative 2020
Conservation works undertaken included roof and chimney repairs, installation of cast-iron rainwater goods, reinstatement of timber sash windows, the repair of masonry render and painting, the repair of historic shopfronts using traditional materials and informed by best conservation practice at O'Connell Street, Sligo.
CPD Programme of Institute of Conservators and Restorers Ireland (ICRI)

This year ICRI organised five virtual lectures for its membership. These CPD presentations focused on three different fields: scientific analysis, copyright and metal conservation.

Traveller History Animated Video

The animation is a new resource raising awareness of the heritage and history of Irish Travellers in a positive accessible format. Traveller history and heritage is part of broader Irish heritage and so generating accessible information on Traveller history is of benefit to support broader society understanding hidden aspects of Irish history.
CMC Cassette Digitisation Project
Funded under the Community Grant Scheme 2020
This project realised the digitisation of 391 cassettes from CMC’s unique audio collection which were starting to show signs of degradation. These cassettes hold recordings of works by contemporary composers, and date from the mid-1990s to early 2000s, and many are unique recordings, not available to the public anywhere else.

Bloomery Iron Smelting Training & Festival Weekend

During the week of 20th-24th August, 6 Irish people were successfully trained in iron smelting by Lee Sauder. Over the weekend, a further 12 teams smelted local bog ore into iron.

Connection with the Maigue River- Community Event Programme

This project aimed to connect members of the community with their local river, the Maigue and raise awareness of the natural heritage and amenity value of the river through environmental presentations and a kayaking trip.
Monksgrange Archives Project
Funded under EYCH Community Grant Scheme 2018
Professional conservation and preservation treatment to 18th and 19th century letters and papers held in the Monksgrange Archives. The items for treatment were selected by a consultative team including historian/achivist Dr. Philip Bull, paper conservation specialist Susan Corr and archives manager Jeremy Hill.

Bat Conservation Ireland: BATLAS 2020
BATLAS 2020 is a three year programme (2016-2018) which will survey the bat population throughout Ireland, at eight survey points in every 10 km squared. It’s a mammoth task which will involve over 150 volunteers, recording the presence or absence of common pipistrelle, soprano pilistrelle, Leisler’s bats and the Daubenton bat. The plan is to update and improve on the data collected in BATLAS 2010, carried out ten years ago.

Birdwatch Ireland Swift Conservation
Birdwatch Ireland trains teams of swift conservation volunteers – many of whom belong to Tidy Town groups and other community initiatives – to protect swift nesting sites as part of the Swift Conservation programme. There are between 500-600 volunteers in up to 50 community groups throughout Ireland. Read More
The Baltray Little Terns Conservation Scheme
Little terns are one of Ireland’s rarest breeding sea birds. Volunteers from the Louth Nature Trust spend up to 100 hours each season, protecting the nesting sites of Little Terns on a 1.5 km area of Baltray beach in County Louth. The beach is one of the sites that these summer migrants return to each year.

Mulranney Environmental Group Habitat Mapping and Biodiversity Action Plan
The Habitat Mapping and Biodiversity Action Plan project sets out to map 1,750 hectares, taking in the Nephin Mountain range and the Corraun peninsula. The landscape ranges from uplands to coastal areas, mature woodlands and wetlands. The Mulranney Environmental Group is hoping that the area will become a place for high nature value farming.

Irish Peatland Conservation Council Bog Restoration and Management
The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) is enhancing the breeding habitat of the beautiful golden brown patterned Marsh Fritillary butterfly at its site on Lullymore West Bog, County Kildare. The cutaway bog which was donated to the IPCC by Bord na Mona, is now regenerating into a species rich grassland and moorland with a range of habitats.

Merlin Park Woods Heritage Conservation and Woodland Coppicing Research 2017
Merlin Park Woods, on the eastern side of Galway City is the largest and oldest urban woodland in the city. In recent times, nineteen butterfly species, five bat species, red squirrels and short-eared owls have all been identified in the woods. The community group, Friends of Merlin Park is actively campaigning to generate greater interest and understanding of the rich biodiversity of what is the city’s least used park. In 2017 the community group are holding workshops in woodland coppicing and stone wall restoration.

Saving our National Schools records - ANSEOI Project

The ANSEO project is an initiative to digitally archive all the national school statutory records in North Mayo - West Sligo. Over 285,000 images have been gathered of school roll-books, registers and ancillary documents - thus preserving them forever.
Conservation of pair of Jackson Dublin Mirrors 1810

Waterford Treasures sourced a pair of Regency mirrors which were dated about 1810. The mirrors had a trade label on the back which confirmed they were made by Richard Jackson of 5 Essex Bridge.
