Places Matter- Chamber Guide to Best Practice in Local Economic Development
Ian Talbot is the Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland and Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Ireland, positions he has held since 2008.
Chambers Ireland is an All-Island network of Chambers of Commerce which serves over 8,000 business members, and their local business communities. With its wide geographical spread across the country, the diverse nature of the chambers network has meant that Chambers Ireland has a unique focus on health of local economies. Its role as a campaigner for vibrant cities and towns was strengthened in 2019 when the 41 city, town, and county chambers which are affiliated with Chambers Ireland pledged to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Signing up to the SDGs has made the task of supporting “Sustainable Cities and Communities” even more central to Chambers Ireland’s policy and advocacy work. Town centre vacancies, traffic congestion, and urban sprawl are all elements that combine to damage out communities, our economic health, and overall quality of life.
Chambers Ireland sees the creation of sustainable communities as being essential to resolving the city and town planning problems that are holding back our potential in the present and are exacerbating the challenges of tomorrow.
Advocating for a National Town Centre First Strategy, particularly in the post COVID-19 recovery, is a priority for Chambers Ireland and our members. Prior to taking on the leadership of Chambers Ireland, Ian was Director of Citigroup and JP Morgan Chase in Ireland for 18 years. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse where he worked in their Dublin and Luxembourg offices, and holds MA and BBS degrees from Trinity College, Dublin. Ian is Deputy President of Eurochambres – the Association of European Chambers of Commerce. Ian is also a member of the NESC, the National Competitiveness Council and is a Director of ESB Networks DAC and Skillnet Ireland.
