Key Heritage Council projects highlighted at launch of National Biodiversity Action Plan

News

A number of Heritage Council initiatives are being highlighted as key biodiversity projects in the fourth National Biodiversity Action Plan published today by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The Heritage Council’s work in developing the Local Authority Biodiversity Officer Programme, as well as its work to ensure that all local authorities have a biodiversity action plan in place by 2026, are among those listed as key projects to help realise the Plan’s ambitions.

The Biodiversity Officer Programme is a collaboration between the Heritage Council and local authorities and represents a science-based approach to biodiversity management and conservation at the local level. Biodiversity Officers, working in City and County Councils, play a crucial role in data collection, project implementation, policy development, and community engagement. The programme also contributes to national and international conservation goals.

The Heritage Council has also made significant strides in biodiversity conservation through the Heritage Officer Programme, the Heritage in Schools Scheme, the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme (TFB) and through its funding of the National Biodiversity Data Centre. The TFB is a partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine focusing on the conservation and repair of traditional farm buildings while also preserving the wildlife habitats within the structures.

Virginia Teehan, Chief Executive of the Heritage Council, remarked:

"The launch of the fourth NBAP is a momentous occasion, reflecting our collective commitment to biodiversity. The Heritage Council is proud to play a significant role in this endeavour, especially through initiatives like our Biodiversity Officer Programme and the Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme, which have been instrumental in the conservation of built and cultural heritage as well as biodiversity conservation."

Martina Moloney, Chair of the Heritage Council, added:

"The launch of Ireland's fourth NBAP is a testament to our collective dedication to protecting our natural heritage. At the Heritage Council, we are proud to contribute significantly to this cause, especially through our innovative Biodiversity Officer Programme in partnership with local authorities, which has been a game-changer in local biodiversity conservation."

The Heritage Council remains committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the National Biodiversity Action Plan and to continue our endeavours in conserving Ireland's natural heritage.
