TY Adopt a Monument is a new teaching & learning resource, aimed primarily at teachers and learners in Transition Year.

TY Adopt a Monument is a new teaching & learning resource, aimed primarily at teachers and learners in Transition Year. This resource guides TY students and their teachers through a research and active citizenship project based around their local, built and archaeological heritage.

This resource, which was designed with the input of teachers, delivers on the commitment in Our Place in Time: Heritage Council Strategic Plan 2023-2028 to “support and enable heritage-based education and civic engagement that is inclusive and accessible to all”. It also complements the commitment in Heritage Ireland 2030 to “build heritage awareness into school curricula”. TY Adopt a Monument is based on The Heritage Council’s Adopt a Monument programme, and particularly on the publication Adopt a Monument: Guidance for Community Archaeology Projects.

Our TY Adopt a Monument resource:

  • Guides TY students and their teachers through a research and active citizenship project
  • Includes learning outcomes and learning intentions to assist in lesson planning
  • Features collaborative and active learning exercises, including printable placemat exercises
  • Encourages students to explore their heritage and what it means to them
  • Models effective desk research and critical thinking
  • Structures students’ approaches to planning and conducting site visits
  • Links learners to additional tools and resources at crucial points in their research
  • Empowers students to act to promote or protect their local monument
  • Aligns well with each of the student dimensions in the NCCA’s TY Programme Statement, including ‘Civic & Community Engagement’, ‘Personal Growth’, ‘Being a Learner’, and ‘Career Exploration’.
  • Provides opportunities for learners to reflect on their learning and share their ideas with The Heritage Council
  • Is available as a .pdf slideshow for easy projection and printing
  • Is available in both English and Irish language versions
