The Marine Institute is delighted to announce the launch of a new call under the Marine Research Programme entitled “The Changing Use of Ireland's Ocean: Measuring and monitoring the impacts on our marine biodiversity and ecosystems”. This call aims to address gap in knowledge under four research focus areas that have been identified as outlined below.

  1. Integrated marine survey methods on marine biota and ecosystem functioning.
  2. Advancing biological and ecological data collection frameworks for establishing baselines, management and decision-making.
  3. Use and deployment of new/advanced technologies and modelling tools for biological & ecosystem monitoring.
  4. Adopting nature based solutions to the development of Irish ports, harbours and other strategically important coastal infrastructures.

Applications should propose a programme of research supported by comprehensive provision of relevant data and evidence to enhance our ability to manage use of the marine space with competing interests such as ORE, MPAs, seafood production, maritime transport, recreation and other marine and maritime activities. The work should deliver innovative solutions to help resolve conflicts, support decision-making and inform planning by optimising the space available to each relevant sector in the context of growing competition for space and Ireland’s legislative and policy requirements.

Proposals must be led by a Higher Education Institute based in the Republic of Ireland.

Partnerships are permissible, with eligible Higher Education Institutes, Research Institutes or Other Public Bodies from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland or elsewhere.

Researchers: Post-doctoral researcher, research assistant, MSc/PhD students, or equivalents.

All applications must be submitted through the Marine Institute's online grant management system (RIMS). Details on registration are available in the Guidelines for Applicants.

This call for research proposals is intended to fund public good research on a re-imbursement basis. Funding is provided for up to 100% of eligible costs for Higher Education Institutes, Research Institute or Other Public Research Bodies.

  1. Understanding of the strategic context of the project and the specific research topic - 10%
  2. Extent to which the project addresses the objectives of relevant national/international marine strategies including benefits and impacts of the project - 15%
  3. The scientific and technical quality of the research proposal - 30%
  4. Evidence within the research proposal of ability to address the specific deliverables required in the Terms of Reference - 10%
  5. Scientific quality/track record of the project team and technical capability to carry out the project -15%
