Notre Dame Fire

The Heritage Council wishes to express solidarity with the people of France at the catastrophic damage to Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the most iconic buildings in Europe.

Notre Dame Cathedral is a monument of global, cultural heritage, a place that is unique in our collective imagination, central to the heritage of the French but also to humanity as a whole.

When disasters such as this strike iconic heritage sites, it is a reminder of the fragility of even the most famous architectural icons. The Heritage Council supports all efforts which help communities to rebuild their heritage after disaster. The catastrophe that happened this week reminds us of the power of heritage that connects us to one another. We will work to encourage and support all agencies that can provide assistance to heritage sites and their communities in times of crisis.

The Heritage Council stands by the people of France and the stewards of Notre Dame in safeguarding and rehabilitating this invaluable heritage in the wake of this devastating fire. The Cathedral has suffered many instances of catastrophic damage over the centuries, and it is our hope that it will survive this latest terrible event, that the restoration will be swift and Notre Dame will be returned to worshippers and visitors before too long.

Nous sommes avec vous.
