The Heritage Council has welcomed the appointment by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, of Éamon Ó Cuív TD as Chair of Comhairle na Tuaithe (The Countryside Council).

Comhairle na Tuaithe brings together farming organisations, recreational users and public bodies, including the Heritage Council, to advise on outdoor recreation and to support the delivery of Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors, the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy.

Welcoming the appointment, Dr Martina Moloney, Chair of the Heritage Council, said:

“Outdoor recreation depends on a high-quality environment. People want to walk, cycle and spend time in places with clean water, healthy habitats and well cared-for historic landscapes.

There is still work to do to make sure growing demand for outdoor recreation is matched by strong care for biodiversity and built heritage. But when it is well planned, outdoor recreation can support local jobs, strengthen pride in place and help people connect with Ireland’s natural, built and cultural heritage.”

Outdoor recreation is an increasingly important focus of the Heritage Council’s work with local authorities and communities, particularly in relation to climate action, biodiversity and the management of heritage-rich landscapes. Through its role on Comhairle na Tuaithe, the Heritage Council will continue to support the implementation of Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors in a way that respects and enhances these places.
