Wildlife Content
Ireland has a rich natural heritage — from the sandbanks of the Shannon Estuary to the fens of Monaghan… from the natterjack toad to the Atlantic salmon… from the Killarney fern to the freshwater pearl mussel.
Research Funds
The Heritage Council is a major source of direct funding for research in Ireland through its Fund schemes.
WILDLIFE RESEARCH FUND
The Biodiversity Fund
The Biodiversity Fund was established in 2006, following a recommendation made to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government by COMHAR, the Sustainable Development Council.
Funding for Local Biodiversity Action Plans
In recent years, the Heritage Council has also made funding available to support the implementation of Local Biodiversity Action Plans (LBAPs) in several Local Authorities, and the role of Biodiversity Officers.
In order to support its role in proposing policy, the Heritage Council commissions research on how specific aspects of public policy impact on the national heritage.
Grants
Please note in light of current changes the Heritage Council is reviewing its grants schemes and will be proposing a number of changes to existing schemes for 2010. Three schemes on Heritage Research, Heritage Management, and Heritage Education Community and Outreach will run in 2010. Work on the criteria and application forms is currently underway. Futher information on these will be available during September. Please check back for further information or register for our online newsletter on the front page for updates.
