Wildlife

Ireland has a rich natural heritage — from the sandbanks of the Shannon Estuary to the fens of Monaghan… from the natterjack toad to the Atlantic salmon… from the Killarney fern to the freshwater pearl mussel.

EEAC writes to Environment Commissioner on biodiversity

The European Environment and Sustainable Development Advisory Councils (EEAC) have written to the new European Commissioner for the Environment, calling for urgent action at EU level and inter-governmental level to halt the loss of biodiversity. They also advocate that:

  • the conservation of biodiversity on land and at sea is given the highest priority across all relevant EU policies, including the Sustainable Development Strategy and the EU 2020 Strategy, and
  • the economic valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services should be included in the System of Standard National Accounts.
