Wildlife Content

Ireland has a rich natural heritage — from the sandbanks of the Shannon Estuary to the fens of Monaghan… from the natterjack toad to the Atlantic salmon… from the Killarney fern to the freshwater pearl mussel.

Woodlands of Ireland

The Woodlands of Ireland Group was established in 1998 to focus attention on Ireland's native woodland resource. It is funded by the Heritage Council, the Forest Service and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Woodlands of Ireland has focused primarily on two initiatives in the ten years since its inception — the People’s Millennium Forests Project and the Native Woodland Scheme. Under these two initiatives, the WoI has developed a native woodland training programme, worked on the expansion of the native nursery stock sector, developed ecological management expertise, and identified further areas for the expansion of native woodlands.

Woodlands of Ireland Objectives
  • Develop strategies to secure the sustainable management of Ireland’s semi-natural woodlands.
  • Encourage the restoration of semi-natural woodlands.
  • Facilitate the establishment of new woodlands consisting of native species from native sources.
  • Disseminate information to stakeholders.
  • Initiate educational programmes to promote awareness of the importance of native woodlands.
