Ireland has a rich natural heritage — from the sandbanks of the Shannon Estuary to the fens of Monaghan… from the natterjack toad to the Atlantic salmon… from the Killarney fern to the freshwater pearl mussel.
Local Biodiversity Action Plans
Supporting the preparation and implementation of Local Biodiversity Action Plans is a key priority for the Heritage Council. Such plans are instrumental in the identification and protection of our natural heritage at the local level.
Local Biodiversity Action Plans will help to facilitate the engagement of stakeholders in biodiversity conservation, and increase awareness levels of biodiversity and biodiversity loss. Delivery of these Plans will assist Ireland in contributing to the EU target of halting this loss. Working with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and with Local Authorities around the country, the Heritage Council is assisting in the development of the Plans and providing resources for their implementation.
