Upcoming MISE Events
Co. Waterford Otter SurveyDate: Friday October 5th to Sunday October 7th
The Mammals in a Sustainable Environment Project is pleased to invite volunteers to attend the Co. Waterford otter survey from Friday October 5th to Sunday October 7th. This is a repeat of last year’s event where over 250 otter spraints (faeces) were collected for DNA analysis at Waterford Institute of Technology. The results from last year’s survey will be discussed on the Friday evening and we will also have some guest speakers (to be announced later). The preliminary report from last year can be read here. The survey will take place on the Saturday and will require walking on uneven terrain with the possibility of adverse weather conditions. The event is free to attend and no previous experience is required, but places are limited to 20 people and booking is required. Please contact Denise O’Meara, MISE Project Officer at Waterford Institute of Technology at domeara@wit.ie or 051-302665 for bookings and additional details. The MISE project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Ireland-Wales Programme 2007-2013 (INTERREG IVA).
Otter Diet Workshop
Date: Saturday November 24th
The Mammals in a Sustainable Environment Project is pleased to invite volunteers to attend an otter dietary workshop with mammal specialist Rob Strachan. The workshop will be a parallel workshop to one that took place earlier this year in Wales. The workshop will take place on Saturday, November 24th at Waterford Institute of Technology. The training will deal with the identification of fish, amphibian and small mammal remains from otter spraints (faeces). We will be identifying the diet of the otters from the Co. Waterford otter survey that is taking place in October.
The workshop is free to attend and no previous experience is required, but places are limited to 20 people and booking is required.
