Love Motel for Insects : July 19th to 31st
Night Walks and Talks with Brandon Ballengee
The light installation "Love Motel for Insects" has been turned on at Sculpture in the Parklands. This is Brandon's largest light installation to date and truly dramatic. Please open attached images. We hope to see you down here during the next two weeks on one of our organised walks with the artist.
Visitors are invited to meet Brandon at Lough Boora Parklands for a talk and a walk to the Love Motel for Insects light installation to discover the rich biodiversity of insect life in Lough Boora. We will meet at 9pm at the car park that provides wheel chair access and proceed to the light installation. All visitors must bring a flash lamp. Children will not be allowed on the walk unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Dates of walks:
Wednesday July 21st
Thursday July 22nd
Friday July 23 rd
Wednesday July 28th
Thursday July 29th
Friday July 30th (after presentation by Valerie Clark)
The installation uses ultra violet lights on the enormous blank canvas to attract insects and this will create an opportunity for public interaction with nocturnal arthropods, which are not often seen. This is an ongoing project that has been installed across the world from tropical rain forests, inner city bus stops, Brownfield sites, Scottish Highlands, German city centres and Venetian boats as part of the Venice Biennial. At each site the insects arrive onto the canvas to reproduce and create pheromone paintings! Members of the public will be invited to participate in night walks to the Love Motel installation and Brandon will talk about our nocturnal insect friends as well as document the rich insect biodiversity in the landscape. The last weekend of the residency will culminate with an Insect Festival, which will exhibit the artwork and insect documentation over the two preceding two weeks.
