Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace (LNT) is a code of outdoor ethics which promotes responsible behaviour for visitors to sites of natural, built and cultural interest. An overall approach which is beneficial to the general environment, LNT can be adapted for any countryside activity. Through training and literature, each sector can tailor the LNT message to suit its own specific needs and activities. First developed in North America, Leave No Trace is now being adopted by many other countries. In Ireland, it is an all island-initiative. As a Country Code, its strength lies in its flexible application to all countryside pursuits.
Leave No Trace Ireland promotes and inspires responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. The programme strives to build awareness, appreciation and respect for Ireland's natural and cultural heritage. It is dedicated to creating a nationally recognised and accepted outdoor ethic that promotes personal responsibility.
At the heart of Leave No Trace are seven principles which will help reduce any damage that might be caused by anyone taking part in outdoor activities.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare.
- Be Considerate of Others.
- Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife.
- Travel and Camp on Durable Ground.
- Leave What You Find.
- Dispose of Waste Properly.
- Minimise the Effects of Fire.
