Guided Boyne Navigation Walks
An Taisce are providing two guided walks along the Boyne navigation this Spring. The first walk will take place on the Ramparts section of the Boyne, starting at the Ramparts car park in Navan at 11.45 am on Sunday April 29th (This is a slightly later start time than previously advertised to accommodate the Bus Eireann service).
This walk will extend from Navan to the Bridge of the Boyne at Stackallen, a distance of about 4 miles. Minibuses will be available at Stackallen to return walkers to Navan. Some may not want to complete the whole walk, in which case they can turn back at any time. Walkers should bring their own refreshments and food.
During the walk, Katherine Duff of the Dublin Naturalist Field Club will give explanations and observations on the ecology of the river and its surroundings, highlighting the ecological significance of the area and why it has been designated as a Special Area of Conservation.
There is a Dublin Busáras service from Dublin to Navan Market Square, which will also be returning to Dublin throughout the afternoon. See www.buseireann.ie and Journey planner. To get to the Ramparts Car Park from the Square in the Navan, go down Athlumley Road. Cross the Boyne and it's a few hundred metres on the left. The car park has signage identifying it.
The second walk will take place on the Oldbridge section of the Boyne. starting at Oldbridge House at 11.30 am on Sunday May 13th. This walk will extend from the newly constructed sea lock at Oldbridge to Glenmore and return to Oldbridge House, a round trip of about 3 miles. The walk will be lead by Camilla Keane of An Taisce. It was hoped to provide a bus from Drogheda to Oldbride however this is proving to be too costly. Oldbridge is 6km from Drogheda and depending on how many are interested in attending we should be able to organise a minibus. Both buses and trains run to Drogheda.
Attendance is free but if you are interested in attending either one or both of these walks, please email Camilla at naturalenvironment@antaisce.org to register your place.
