Heritage Outlook : Winter 2009-Spring 2010

This edition of Heritage Outlook examines "Ireland's fraught relationship with the Natural World" as referred to by Michael Viney in his article Nature or Nuisance.

This topic follows on from our previous special edition Heritage Outlook which focused on the Heritage Council's second Annual Landscape Conference held in Tullamore in October 2009.

On related themes, Dr. Simon Burke, discusses the controversial role of the mass media in relation to Irish attitudes to heritage, Kevin M. Leyden and  Su-Ming Khoo ask the questions "Have we built communities that reflect heritage?" and "Have we
built communities with 'identity', 'character' and 'distinctiveness'?", Grainne Shaffrey provides a hopeful insight for built heritage arising from the prosperity years while Mike Brown's stunning photography shows us the wealth of beauty that is in our preserve.

The visual beauty of Ireland's landscape is also featured with the results of the 2009 Heritage Week Photography Competiton while the beauty of Ireland's wildlife is explored in a review of Eanna Ni Lamhna's Wild Things at School.

Dr Simon Berrow and Emmett Johnson track the Basking Shark through Irish Waters; Anthony Keane OSB writes about the restoration of the 56-foot ketch Ilen and Barry O'Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland discusses the green approach to attracting foreign direct investment

News and information on other heritage-themed publications and events complete the wealth of information provided in this issue.
