Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO) is a volunteer-based, non-profit initiative which builds vibrant, lasting links between the global Irish diaspora and parishes of origin in Ireland.
Ireland XO is part-funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and also receives support and funding from The Heritage Council. The programme is based on a simple idea; reverse genealogy. Instead of waiting for people of Irish descent to trace their roots, IrelandXO volunteers worldwide are networking with people of Irish descent in their local areas, helping to build bridges between the present and the past by connecting people with the home parishes of their ancestors.
What work the Heritage Council is funding this year:
The Heritage Council grant provided allows for the retention of a Heritage Resource Manager. The work of the Heritage Resource Manager (HRM) would not be possible without the continued support of the Heritage Council. This vital service provides coordinated support to volunteers throughout Ireland to ensure the operational assistance offered by Ireland XO is meeting the needs of individual volunteers nd assistance to the 90,000 strong registers users on our webiste. The HRM also works to enhance awareness and understanding of the role and Ireland XO overall, especially during Heritage Week. Other functions and responsibilities include:
- Maintain and manage a nationwide genealogy outreach volunteer network
- Implement a method for the creation of support to Ireland XO volunteers
- Give general advice and guidance to the public, Ireland XO volunteers and others in relation to genealogy and research through the IrelandXO website, Message Board, XO Chronicles Project, XO Insights or other media
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date information is available on all areas of volunteer and user activity
