28 New Specialists Added to Our Heritage in Schools Scheme Scheme
The Heritage Council is delighted to announce 28 new Specialists to our Heritage in Schools Scheme panel.
Since the Heritage in Schools Scheme was set up in 2000 it has continued to grow and engage children across Ireland in many aspects of Ireland’s heritage. Today there are 178 Specialists undertaking visits to schools across Ireland. Many of these visits take place outdoors and we are hopeful that, with your help, this number of outdoor visits will continue to grow.
Here in the Heritage Council we are passionate about providing the kinds of supports to schools that will help make outdoor education and place-based learning a much more regular part of the schools educational programme. Our research has shown that children’s time in doors is significantly greater than what their parents experienced and time to just be in the outdoors has declined dramatically in recent years. With a small investment jointly we can help to change these trends. Having knowledge of our environment and our natural heritage is critical for the next generation as they will be tasked in time with responsibility for its care and well-being. All of the Specialists on the Heritage in Schools scheme share a passion for heritage and most of them are keen to take the class outdoors to experience first-hand Ireland’s natural and cultural world, ensuring a memorable visit for pupils and teachers alike. For those days where the weather prevents such outings the Specialists have a wonderful range of indoor activities and artefacts to keep everyone engaged.
