National Heritage Week launches volunteer programme

A Volunteer Programme for National Heritage Week was launched today (14th May 2010) by the Heritage Council, coordinators of the week.

Speaking about the Programme, Rebecca Reynolds, National Coordinator of the week at the Heritage Council said, “this Volunteer Programme is being launched as reaction to the increasing demand during National Heritage Week for volunteering opportunities. Many times people wish to get involved in their local community projects or conservation work and are unsure how to go about it”.

“Volunteering provides an excellent opportunity for those that may be out of work and find themselves with spare time and capacity to get involved in their community. In addition there are also a number of community groups and ENGO’s who have extensive knowledge to impart and who are in need of volunteers for all sorts of projects. The Heritage Council is delighted to facilitate this”, added Ms. Reynolds.

Any organisations or event organisers who need help during National Heritage Week are asked to submit their volunteer requirements to the Heritage Council. A list of all volunteer opportunities in each county will then appear on the National Heritage Week website, www.heritageweek.ie.

The diverse range of events that take place during National Heritage Week offer opportunities for volunteers to learn about and gain experience in a huge variety of disciplines, from event management and PR to archives, genealogy, wildlife, archaeology, folklore and everything in between.

Heritage Week is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and is part of European Heritage Days, which is celebrated in over 49 countries across Europe.
