Collections of diverse objects such as books, coins, vintage cars, boats and farm machinery provide a link with our past. The preservation of such collections is an important part our Museums and Archive work.

Role
The Museums and Archive Committee addresses all policy areas associated with material culture. They are responsible for advising the Heritage Council on the development and support of Ireland’s museums, archives and collecting institutions.
Aims
- Provide policy advice as it relates to museums, archives and collections.
- Develop and sustain partnerships on strategically important cultural heritage initiatives.
- Promote the collection, preservation, management, interpretation and presentation, and development of Ireland's cultural heritage.
- Strengthen provisions for the material heritage through the development of strategies supporting museum and archive development.
Policy
The Museums and Archive Committee promotes a culture which safeguards irreparable material culture. Through its Museums Standards Programme, support for preventive conservation, and overall promotion of best practice in conservation, the Committee wishes to encourage greater awareness and care of Ireland’s rich material heritage and its ultimate enjoyment by all.

Future Plans
By gathering data on the diversity of collections in the country, the Museums and Archives Committee wishes to be better informed on the nature of collections available. Such information will condition the nature of policy provision. Considerable progress is already underway in areas such as Maritime Collections, Agricultural Machinery and Transport Collections.
