Museums & Archive Content

Collections of diverse objects such as books, coins, vintage cars, boats and farm machinery provide a link with our past. The preservation of such collections is an important part our Museums and Archive work.

Sarah Maisey
  2007-2008
At Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane, intern Sarah Maisey conducted a conservation audit of the gallery’s 900 paintings, dating from the early 19th century to the present day, by assessing the media, techniques and condition of each piece. This conservation database is integrated with the gallery’s main collections database, and will greatly assist the planning of future conservation treatments.

The audit also highlighted areas of the collection warranting further research and will assist in managing the care of the collection on a daily basis. Contact with contemporary paintings during the conservation audit led Sarah to begin research into retouching modern painted surfaces. This has allowed her to expand her experience of different types of conservation treatments in situations where traditional methods may not be viable.
