Museums & Archive

Museums & Archive Content

Collections of diverse objects such as books, coins, vintage cars, boats and farm machinery provide a link with our past. The preservation of such collections is an important part our Museums and Archive work.

Heritage Council Initiatives

The Heritage Council is involved in many initiatives to protect, preserve and enhance our heritage. In this section you will find information about our initiatives related to Museums & Archive.

Museum Standards Programme for Ireland

The Heritage Council’s main commitment to collections care comes through its support of the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI). This important initiative, with participants from a wide range of Irish collecting institutions, sets out to raise standards of care across Irish museums and galleries.

Previous Initiatives

The Museum Awards Scheme

The Museum Awards aim to highlight and celebrate the achievements of museums and collections, together with their curators and staff, as they strive to care for and protect our heritage, and make it as accessible to as many people as possible.

Conservation Awards Ireland

The inaugural Heritage Council Conservation Award was awarded in 2009 to John Gillis, conservator at the National Museum for his work on the Fadden More Psalter, the remains of an illuminated vellum manuscript which was found in a bog in Co Tipperary, in July 2006.
