Transport Collections Ireland : A Future for the Past

On 23rd June 2008, the Heritage Council held a Policy Day on Irish transport Collections. Developing from discussions with the Department of Arts Sports and Tourism, the day set out to address the breadth, diversity, and potential of Irish transport collections. A range of speakers highlighted the nature and extent of such collections and the custodial issues confronting their vulnerability and future utilisation for the common good.  A range of invited speakers highlighted experiences elsewhere and suggested potentials that might be explored as the needs of this sector are addressed. In addition to formal presentations a range of facilitated workshops encouraged lively debate and a chance to air issues of concern.

To be addressed by:  Dr Martin Bellamy, Major Projects & Research Manager, Culture and Sport Glasgow (www.glasgowmuseums.com); John Kelleher, Chair Transport Museum Society of Ireland; Gabriel Konig / Malcolm Clark, Beaulieu Car Museum (www.beaulieu.ie); Sam Mullins, Chief Executive, London Transport Museum (www.ltmuseum.co.uk); Andrew Scott, Director,

National Railway Museum, York (www.nrm.org.uk); Dominic Sore and Taeke Kuipers, Haley Sharpe Design (www.haleysharpe.com); Dr Patrick Wallace, Director, National Museum of Ireland (www.museum.ie).

Recommendations:

Notes from this workshop will be posted on this site presently.

The main ‘message’ to emerge from those assembled was the need to carry out an initial audit of collections held publicly and privately across Ireland.  This would complement such projects already undertaken, most notably the ‘Audit of Maritime Collections’ (2005). It would also prove a useful baseline to explore the potential for the sector.
