UCD Scholarship - Doctoral Research - Urban Resilience & Sustainability
UCD School of Architecture is pleased to offer a scholarship to fund full-time doctoral research in the area of Urban Resilience and Sustainability. The successful candidate will commence in September 2012 and the funding is tenable for a maximum of four years, renewable each year subject to satisfactory progress. The successful applicant will receive total funding of approximately €16K per annum for up to 4 years and an annual contribution of €5K towards tuition fees. The 2011/12 fee for an EU PhD student is €5,800. The position is supported by the Seventh Framework Programme of the EU by their funding of the TURaS project www.turas-cities.org
The "TURaS" initiative brings urban communities and businesses together with local authorities and researchers to collaborate on practical new solutions for more sustainable and resilient European cities. The PhD student will be involved in the research on TURaS Work Package 3 “Urban/Industrial Regeneration, Land Use Planning and Creative Design” with specific focus on the role of creative design in assessing the sustainable re-use use of buildings on vacant sites, examining the socio-economic implications of clearing sites and identifying the various ecosystem services that re-used sites may have.
The PhD student will be involved in field-work across Ireland and abroad in our partner cities and have opportunities for international travel to major conferences and for scientific collaboration. The PhD student will also be required to assist in delivering the Landscape Architectural programme at UCD (maximum of 8 hours per week during the two teaching semesters) and work closely with TURaS colleagues in UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy (GPEP).
Applicants should hold a good Masters degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning or closely related discipline. Qualifying candidates should forward: + A 500 word statement explaining their interest in this research and why they wish to undertake a PhD at UCD in the area of “Urban/Industrial Regeneration, Land Use Planning and Creative Design.
