Continuity in Stone: 2nd Conference - The O'Tunneys & the O’Sheas

Date: 27 - 29 July 2012
Location: The Friary (Droichead Resource Centre), Mill Street, Callan, Co Kilkenny.
Price: €15/ €12 concession

An extraordinary flowering of sculptural and architectural stonecarving occurred in the period 1500-1600 in Kilkenny city and county. Callan as the most important town in the county was the base of the O'Tunney school
of sculptors who, unusually, signed their work. Magnificent carving on many funeral monuments still speaks to us today of the skill of Rory, William, Patrick and James O'Tunney and of the wealth and tastes of their patrons. This conference will build on the first conference in 2010 while emphasizing the continuity of practice in Callan by focusing also on the O’Shea sculptors.
