Ship Street Revisited

Travel back to the Drogheda of the 1940s. On the banks of the Boyne sits a street that has a story to tell; a story of local people, working people, and the town they remember. Ship Street Revisited is about memories, about real people’s stories retold, re-imagined and re-presented in the community in which they first took place. Weaving the oral history of an industrial age with
contemporary performance technique, we use the urban landscape and over fifty local performers to reintroduce a town to its invisible past.
This is the second instalment of the Shared Heritage Programme that
brought Come Forward to Meet You to the Drogheda Arts Festival in 2011.
Last year Upstate Theatre Project initiated the Shared Heritage Programme with Come Forward to Meet You, the first of three projects that set to explore Drogheda’s oral histories through contemporary storytelling. The trilogy continues this year with a site-specific performance facilitated and directed by Paul Hayes.
Ship Street Revisited utilises a local cast of fifty to interpret a series of oral history testimonies that the company has been exploring with writer Aidan Harney since 2010. Ship Street Revisited is performed in vacant premises and the wide expanse of a street synonymous with Drogheda’s industrial past. Using the testimony of the men and women who worked in the boot and shoe factories, the breweries and the mills and those who lived on Ship Street itself, the performance weaves installation, street performance and drama into an impressive spectacle of oral history and modern
storytelling.
