Helping the Hills - Mountaineering Ireland Conference

Many of Ireland’s mountains are suffering from the effects of erosion, whether through natural processes, or recreational use, or indeed a combination of these. As most mountain areas have a high conservation value this is a cause for concern.
Given the continued growth in the number of recreational users on our hills, there is need for a broader knowledge base amongst land managers, local authorities and the recreation community as to how to manage erosion effectively and the most appropriate techniques to use.
Helping the Hills will bring together a number of high-profile speakers from Britain and Ireland to share lessons from their experience in recreation and erosion management. The event will also include site visits to look at erosion and path work that has been carried out in the Wicklow and Dublin Mountains.
This event should be of interest and value to those involved in the promotion, funding and management of outdoor recreation, local authorities, land managers, participants in outdoor recreation and all those with an interest in the sustainable management of upland areas. The conference will be jointly opened by Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht & Minister Alex Attwood MLA, Minister for the Environment (NI).
