The Science Gallery in partnership with IBM and Dublin City Council are running Sensing the City a biodiversity mapping workshop, which will take place next week on Tue, 31 July, 14.00-16.00 and Thur, 2 Aug, 14.00-16.00, 2012.

Sensing the City is a series of citizenship science experiments for 12-15 year olds, with a focus on biodiversity.

Come down to the HACKLAB at Science Gallery and learn how to map biodiversity in the city, understand what species are native and learn how we can protect our habits.

Drawing on data collected by Dublin City Council, IBM researches have created EcoEyes, an Android and web app, which allows you to spot and map our urban species. Each workshop will run for two hours and focuses on:

  • ·         Understanding biodiversity
  • ·         Mapping and city biodiversity
  • ·         Demo of EcoEyes
  • ·         Mapping walk using EcoEyes
  • ·         Documenting and evaluating your biodiversity findings

Spaces are limited so book early.

This workshop has been developed in partnership with IBM Research – Ireland is one of eleven IBM Research laboratories worldwide. The lab in Ireland combines the Smarter Cities Technology Centre with additional research missions in risk management, exascale computing, and hybrid systems.

Data consultation has been provided by Dublin City Council, Parks and Landscape Services Division.
