13,James Joyce Tower and Museum,Joyce Tower,Sandycove Point,Sandycove,Dublin ,,01 2809265,http://jamesjoycetower.com/,joycetower@failteireland.ie,"The Martello Tower on Sandycove Point is one of a series of 26 similar towers erected along the coast of County Dublin in 1804 to counter the threat of a Napoleonic invasion. Forty feet high, with granite walls eight feet thick, it had a swivelling cannon mounted on the top. The towers never saw action, and in 1897 the War Department decommissioned the Sandycove tower to put it up for rent. In 1904 it was lived in briefly by the young James Joyce at the invitation of Oliver St John Gogarty, and it subsequently became the setting for the opening of his great novel Ulysses, published in 1922. Joyce described the tower exactly as he remembered it, with characters based on its real-life occupants, but he also implied that he himself had paid the rent. The Joyce Tower, as it inevitably became known, was bought and opened as the James Joyce Museum in 1962. The collection includes portraits and photographs, first editions of Ulysses and Joyce's other works, letters and manuscript items, Joyce's death mask and some of his personal possessions – his waistcoat and cane, his guitar and travelling trunk, and a tie which he presented to Samuel Beckett from his own wardrobe. When built (between 1712 and 1732) it had a flat plaster ceiling and shelving for books was on the lower level only, with an open gallery. By the 1850s these shelves had become completely full; largely as since 1801 the Library had been given the right to claim a free copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland. In 1860 the roof was raised to allow construction of the present barrel-vaulted ceiling and upper gallery bookcases. Marble busts line the Long Room, a collection that began in 1743 when 14 busts were commissioned from sculptor Peter Scheemakers. The busts are of the great philosophers and writers of the western world and also of men connected with Trinity College - famous and not so famous. The finest bust in the collection is of the writer Jonathan Swift by Louis Francois Roubiliac. The Book of Kells (Trinity College Dublin MS 58) is celebrated for its lavish decoration. The manuscript contains the four Gospels in Latin based on a Vulgate text, written on vellum (prepared calfskin), in a bold and expert version of the script known as ""insular majuscule"". The place of origin of the Book of Kells is generally attributed to the scriptorium of the monastery founded around 561 by St Colum Cille on Iona, an island off the west coast of Scotland. In 806, following a Viking raid on the island which left 68 of the community dead, the Columban monks took refuge in a new monastery at Kells, County Meath. It must have been close to the year 800 that the Book of Kells was written, although there is no way of knowing if the book was produced wholly at Iona or at Kells, or partially at each location. It has been on display in the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin from the mid 19th century, and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. Since 1953 it has been bound in four volumes. Two volumes are on public view, one opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script. Built between 1722 and 1729 for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and the wealthiest commoner in Ireland. The façade was almost certainly designed by the Italian architect, Alessandro Galilei, while the Irish architect Sir Edward Lovett Pearce added the wings. The house remained in the hands of the Speaker's descendants until 1965 when the house was purchased by a property developer Major Wilson. Fortunately the house was saved in 1967 when along with 120 acres of the demesne lands it was purchased by the Hon. Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society for £93,000. The house was opened to the public in the same year and restoration work began, funded by the Irish Georgian Society and private benefactors. In 1979 care of the house passed to the Castletown Foundation, a charitable trust which was established to own, maintain and to continue the restoration of the house. In 1994 the house with the exception of the contents, was transferred to State care and it is now managed by the Office of Public Works. The transfer to State ownership has paved the way for a major programme of restoration and conservation work of the house and demesne lands. Through restoration, conservation, acquisition of parkland and development of visitor facilities, the long term objective is to preserve for future generations one of the most important houses in Ireland and one of significance in terms of European architectural heritage.",,KE2,,Historic Building,313,697900,734200

Over the eight centuries of its existence, many additions and alterations have been made to the fabric of the building, making Kilkenny Castle today a complex structure of various architectural styles. Kilkenny Castle later became the principal Irish residence of the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years. The Butler ownership began when James (c.1360-1405), 3rd Earl of Ormond, purchased the castle in c.1391, and lasted until 1967 when Arthur, 6th Marquess of Ormonde (1893-1971), presented it to the people of Kilkenny in return for a token payment of £50. In 1948 a municipal gallery building was constructed to house the collection, as an addition to the Carnegie Free Library and Museum situated in the grounds of the People’s Park, Pery Square. LCGA’s collection policy builds on that set out by the founding committee in 1937, which had a principal aim to secure ‘examples of the work of all well-known artists of Irish birth, or of those who have worked in Ireland.’ The committee also desired that ‘an important section of the gallery be reserved for Limerick men and women who attained distinction in history, literature or the arts’ with another section reserved ‘for paintings in watercolour, drawings, engravings etc.’ LCGA’s Permanent Collection has, as with most collections, grown organically. Its initial drive and direction was given by a combination of artists, business people and politicians.
