Architecture Content

Our architectural heritage is one of the most tangible aspects of our heritage. By conserving our historic buildings we help to preserve them for future generations to enjoy as part of their heritage, just as we do now.

Heritage Council Initiatives

The Heritage Council is involved in many initiatives to protect, preserve and enhance our heritage. In this section you will find information about our initiatives related to Architecture.

REPS 4 Traditional Farm Buildings Grants Scheme

The Heritage Council administers the REPS 4 Traditional Farm Building Grant Scheme on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Grants are available to carry out approved conservation works to the exterior of farm outbuildings (roof, outside surface of walls, windows and doors) and associated structures (historic yard surfaces, walls, gate pillars, gates). Grant awards vary between €5,000 and €20,000.

Áras Na hOidhreachta: Headquarters of The Heritage Council

In its search for a permanent headquarters in 2008, the Heritage Council saw the potential of Áras Na hOidhreachta (The Bishop’s Palace) in Kilkenny. It was larger than the incumbent bishop needed, and agreement was reached for the Heritage Council to purchase and conserve the building and part of the site.

Mayglass Farmstead Project, Co. Wexford

Mounting the first project of its kind ever undertaken in Ireland, the Heritage Council conserved Mayglass Farmstead in Co. Wexford using traditional skills such as thatching and mud-wall construction. With assistance from the European Union and its Raphael Programme, the conservation team also achieved another important goal in proving that modern techniques could be used in such a conservation project.
