The Wood Quay Venue shortlisted for RIAI Awards 2012
The Wood Quay Venue has been shortlisted for the RIAI awards 2012. The winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on the 21st of June 2012.
The client comment in the award submission is as follows.
“A stretch of the Hiberno-Norse city wall was entombed in a void in the basement of the Civic Offices since its completion in the early 1980s. It was uncovered during the famous Wood Quay excavations of the 1970s. The Dublin City Walls and Defences Conservation Plan identified an opportunity to present to the public this extensive stretch of the city wall, by creating a new public space around it. The Architects inventively transformed this void into a vibrant and popular meeting place.
The design embraces the city wall as the starting point of a narrative of successive layers of building history and intervention. The presentation of the wall acknowledges the difficult legacy of its recent history, with crude underpinning and archaeological markings left for all to see. The result is to make a unique space within the city which can be used for conferences, as a community space, and a place for cultural events.
The Wood Quay Venue is a great success both commercially and as a model for conservation/adaption of historical sites within the city. Dublin City Council acknowledges the Heritage Council/ Irish Walled Towns Network for the grant assistance which began this process.”
