The Heritage Council’s mission is to engage, educate and advocate to develop a wider understanding of the vital contribution that our heritage makes to our social, environmental and economic well-being.

Wicklow Uplands Council

The Wicklow Uplands Council is an independent, voluntary organisation with charitable status. It provides a forum at which interested, non-statutory organisations and individuals can have their say in the decision-making process affecting the sustainable development of the local environment in the spirit of Local Agenda 21. Established in January 1997, it has since endeavored to implement its core mission:

‘To promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of the Wicklow Uplands in partnership with the people who live, work and recreate there.’

Wicklow Uplands Council seeks to:

  • Build consensus and trust
  • Foster a partnership approach to sustainable development
  • Manage/transform conflict
  • Protect and enhance the uplands environment
  • Undertake initiatives with support from local people and recreational users
  • Engage in initiatives that make economic sense

The Heritage Council is the main core funder of Wicklow Uplands Council and supports the Council’s involvement with EUROPARC, where we represent the Irish sustainable development NGO sector on the executive of the Atlantic Isles section. The Heritage Council has also funded some of the Council’s projects such as the Network of Heritage Interpretive Panels, the Wicklow Sustainable Trails Network, Young Observers, Lugalla Carriage Collection Feasibility Study, and Voluntary Countryside Ranger Scheme.
